Russia has about 37 Tu-95MS and Tu-95MSM bombers remaining after another aircraft was struck in Engels overnight Friday, Defense Express reported on Aug. 28.
According to Ukrainian intelligence data published several days ago, Russia had 38 combat-ready Tu-95 bombers. Following the overnight strike on the bomber in Engels, Russia now has 37 combat-ready aircraft of this type.
At the same time, Russia’s Aerospace Forces officially have 47 Tu-95 missile-carrying bombers, according to Defense Express, but at least 10 of them are unable to carry out combat missions.
The outlet suggested that the SBU’s overnight attack on Engels further limited Russia’s capabilities and may have disrupted plans for another long-range strike on Ukraine.
Defense Express reported that the SBU’s Alpha special operations unit may have struck the Tu-95MS with MICH 2000 long-range drones, citing footage published online. The drone, which somewhat resembles a Shahed, has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers and can carry a 60-kilogram warhead.
Explosions were reported overnight June 28 in the Russian city of Engels in Saratov Oblast, with monitoring channels reporting a possible attack on the air base.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later confirmed that the SBU’s Alpha unit had struck a Russian Tu-95MS. Satellite images indicate significant damage to the aircraft.
