Russia may have deployed its newest large Ivan Gren-class landing ship from Novorossiysk to occupied Sevastopol, the Krymsky Veter (Crimean Wind) Telegram channel reported on Jan. 7, citing OSINT MT Anderson satellite imagery.
Images taken by the Sentinel-2 satellite, taken on Jan. 6, shows a Project 11711 ship docked in Sevastopol Bay.
The Petr Morgunov landing ship, which belongs to the same project, was reportedly deployed to the Black Sea for exercises in January 2022, before the start of the Russian full-scale invasion. This ship was mostly stationed in the bay of Novorossiysk, according to Krymsky Veter.
The Petr Morgunov is the second ship of the series, which was commissioned on Dec. 23, 2020. It has a total displacement of 6,600 tons and is capable of transporting a reinforced naval battalion with equipment, as well as conducting landings on pontoons. It is also equipped with an air group consisting of two Ka-29 helicopters and an Orlan-10 UAV in the deck hangar.
Loud explosions were heard in the port city of Feodosia in occupied Crimea in the early hours of Dec. 26. Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleschuk reported that Ukrainian forces had conducted a strike on the large landing ship Novocherkassk, and expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian pilots who flew the mission.
The Ukrainian Air Force later confirmed that the attack was carried out with cruise missiles.
The missile hit the bow of the ship, leading to a massive explosion and a raging fire. It is believed that 77 crew members were on board at the time of the attack.
