Russia likely seized up to 550 sq km of Ukraine in July — UK intelligence
In July 2025, Russian occupation forces likely seized about 500 to 550 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, the UK Defense Ministry said, citing intelligence reports on Aug. 9 .
The invaders seized a territory of similar size in June, following gradual gains since March 2025.
"Russian ground forces continued tactical advances in Donetsk Oblast, mainly to the northeast and southwest of Pokrovsk. They continue attempts to encircle the city and take control of the remaining logistical routes within it," the intelligence report stated.
British intelligence also noted that over the past two weeks, the invaders have made no visible advances in Sumy Oblast, and that “sustained losses and Ukrainian counterattacks have likely undermined Russian intentions to create a buffer zone.” According to the report, Russians from the 51st Airborne Regiment in Sumy Oblast are refusing to follow orders and are complaining about commanders who send them on “meat assaults.”
The UK intelligence added that Ukraine’s Defence Forces are likely continuing “limited operations” in Kursk Oblast of the aggressor country.
In early August, the DeepState analytical project reported that in July, the Russians occupied 564 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, reaching nearly the same figures as in June.
In early June, analysts from the UA War Infographics project stated that in the first five months of 2025, Russian invaders had seized 1,282 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory — twice as much as in the same period in 2024.
