Russian African Corps deployed in Kharkiv offensive — UK Intel

Russia deployed units of the African Corps of the Russian Defense Ministry alongside regular Russian forces and Storm-Z units over the past week during the Kharkiv Oblast offensive, the UK Defense Ministry intelligence reported on X on May 24.
The African Corps of the Russian Defense Ministry, established in December 2023, consists of over 2,000 regular soldiers and officers, as well as experienced mercenaries, many of whom previously served in the Wagner Group, the report said.
African Corps detachments most likely were previously deployed to Syria, Libya, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
The Russian Defense Ministry likely redeployed units from the African Corps to the Ukrainian border during April as part of preparations for the offensive on Kharkiv Oblast, the UK intelligence said.
It is highly probable that Russia is reinforcing its war on Ukraine with resources previously assigned to Africa, the report said.
Russian offensive in Kharkiv Oblast
Russian forces attempted to breach Ukraine's defenses near Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast on May 10, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported. Ukrainian forces successfully repelled the attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian troops had launched a new counteroffensive in the area.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, described the situation in Kharkiv Oblast as "escalating." He stated that Russian troops had extended the active combat zone by 70 km.
The DeepState monitoring group claimed on may 20 that Russian troops advanced near 10 settlements in Kharkiv Oblast.
