Russian invaders focus on capture of Mariupol, storming Izyum area
The core elements of Russia’s invading force are continuing to focus on the capture of Mariupol, in Donetsk Oblast, and conducting an offensive near the city of Izyum in Kharkiv Oblast, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on April 8.
The Russian army is trying to break through the defenses of the Joint Forces grouping in the Donetsk area, the General Staff said.
“Invading troops are concentrating their efforts on taking control of the settlements of and Popasna, Rubizhne in Luhansk Oblast, and establishing control over the strategic city of Mariupol on the south coast of Donetsk Oblast,” the General Staff said in its morning update. “They are continuing to conduct assault operations in most areas.”
The invaders tried to carry out assaults near the settlements of Rubizhne, Popasna, Nyzhnie, Novotoshkivske, Zolote and Borovske, but were driven back, the General Staff said.
