Explosion at Kursk train station, Moscow flights grounded overnight, Russian officials blame Ukrainian UAVs
Passengers at Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports were grounded overnight on Aug. 20 after authorities implemented a “Carpet” protocol in response to a potential UAV threat, reported the BAZA Telegram channel.
Passengers were left stranded after all departure flights were delayed, while incoming flights were redirected to Sheremetyevo Airport.
Russian air defense allegedly “prevented an attempt of a drone flyover towards Moscow from the southern direction” at around 5:00 a.m., said Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of a “UAV attack” akin to an aerial assault, in a 5:35 a.m. message. Russian authorities claimed to have intercepted a drone “headed towards Moscow” above the Stupinsky District of Moscow Oblast, neutralizing it using electronic warfare measures. The drone “crashed in an uninhabited area, causing no casualties or damage,” claimed Russia’s Defense Ministry.
At the same time, an explosion rocked the vicinity of the Kursk railway station, igniting a fire in the area., reported BAZA.
Eyewitnesses captured videos of a minor fire on the station building’s roof and shattered glass.
A “Ukrainian drone” crashed into the train station’s roof, triggering the fire, alleges Kursk Oblast Governor Roman Starovoyt, who claimed that five people sustained minor injuries from glass fragments.
