Russia intensifies bid to oust Ukrainian forces from Kursk Oblast
Russian troops have intensified their campaign to push Ukrainian Armed Forces out of Kursk Oblast, with fighting raging in settlements around Sudzha, according to the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War’s latest report on March 8.
Geolocated footage from March 8 shows Russian forces recently captured Cherkasskoye Porechnoye, north of Sudzha. Advance units of Russia’s 30th and 1427th Motorized Rifle Regiments are moving in the area.
Some Russian milbloggers and propagandists claim airborne units took Lebedevka, west of Sudzha, while others say Russian troops advanced up to 8 kilometers into Ukrainian territory. Ukraine’s military command denied these reports.
Since March 8, Russian forces have attacked Sudzha itself, with the Chechen “Aida” special group, 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment, 11th Airborne Brigade, “Veteran” assault unit, and Caspian Flotilla marines involved, ISW reported.
Some sources reported Russian troops tried a covert attack via an underground gas pipeline, though details remain murky.
Russia’s army is actively destroying bridges in Kursk Oblast to hinder Ukrainian retreats and supply lines. Bloggers say a bridge on the H-07 Sumy-Sudzha highway and another over the Psel River between Myropillya in Sumy Oblast and Gornal in Kursk were wrecked.
ISW’s initial assessment suggests Russia aims to block the H-07 highway to disrupt Ukrainian logistics and encircle its forces in Kursk.
Ukrainian sources admit the front is tough but say the military is planning counter moves to stabilize the situation.
