EU sanctions plan could stop Putin’s war machine — U.S. Republican Senator Graham
U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham voiced support for the European Commission’s proposed new sanctions against Russia, he wrote on X on June 11.
“I am very pleased that our European partners — through the EU Commission — are introducing a new round of sanctions against Russia for its barbaric invasion of Ukraine,” Senator Lindsey Graham wrote on social media platform X.
Graham added that this round of sanctions is particularly significant as it targets Chinese companies that support the military operations of Vladimir Putin.
“If China and India did not buy 70% of Russian oil, Putin’s military machine could stop,” the senator emphasized.
He also highlighted the importance of sanctions on Nord Stream 1 and 2. Graham is convinced that the decision to lower the price limit for Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel will significantly impact Putin’s finances.
On June 10, the EU proposed a ban on transactions related to Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. The EU also recommended reducing the maximum price for Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel.
The new sanctions list includes 77 additional vessels belonging to Russia’s "shadow fleet," bringing the total number of sanctioned vessels to 342. Additionally, a ban on the import of petroleum products derived from Russian crude oil has been proposed.
In the banking sector, the European Union is recommending a full ban on transactions through the SWIFT system. This would apply to 22 more Russian banks.
The new sanctions also include measures to prevent financial operators in third countries from trading with Russia to bypass sanctions. There are also proposals to impose restrictions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund, its subsidiaries, and its investment projects.
The next phase of the sanctions package involves further bans on exports worth more than $2.675 billion. These restrictions would target the export of goods for mechanical engineering, metals, plastics, and chemicals, which are used as raw materials in various industries. Additionally, the EU plans to limit the export of technologies and dual-use goods used by Russia to produce drones, missiles, and other weapons.
The EU also added 22 Russian and foreign companies to the sanctions list for providing direct or indirect support to Russia's military-industrial complex.
On June 5, Graham announced that the US Senate plans to soon pass legislation imposing severe sanctions on the Russia in response to the actions of Vladimir Putin.
