Russian troops cross water channel in Chasiv Yar, clashes ensue in city center
The Russian forces managed to cross the Siversky water channel in Chasiv Yar, thus, the fighting is underway already in the city center, former Aidar battalion company commander and war veteran, Yevhen Dykiy told Radio NV.
He made this statement therefore putting an end to recent discussions about whether Russians managed to advance in the city.
"Unpleasant news coming from Chasiv Yar," Dykyi said. "The Russians were held back along the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas Canal for a long time: a water obstacle is always a very cool thing in defense. But, unfortunately, this is already in the past, the Russians were able to cross the canal, the fighting is already going on to the west of it - in the central part... I wanted to say the city, but only ruins left, as Chasiv Yar is completely demolished. There is no real city there anymore, but there are already battles in the central part of these ruins."
The advance of the Russians in Chasiv Yar is very slow, "as always in urban development," he said.
"The nature of the battles in Chasiv Yar itself is that one house is theirs, the other is ours," he said.
"Progress there is estimeted not in kilometers or even by blocks, but by houses. They crawl there from house to house."
The Defense Forces advantage is to some extent leveled out in urban development - "the fact that we have very accurate artillery and the drones work very well," and at the same time the "advantage in manpower" that the Russians have comes into play.
"They just crawl like cockroaches, and there aren't enough slippers to slap all those cockroaches," Dykyi said, not hiding his emotions.
"There sustain terrible losses, but they are creeping up from different sides."
Dykiy also mentioned the advantages of defense in urban development.
"You are not tied to the line of trenches, and shelter is every relatively intact ruin, every basement is your shelter," he said.
"The defense is also quite flexible and mobile. That's why battles in buildings always last a long time. Let's remember Bakhmut, Soledar, Avdiivka - all these cities were fought for months."
Situation in Chasiv Yar
The Russian troops had advanced deep into Chasiv Yar, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported, based on the results of August 3. Geolocation footage released on August 2 indicates that the Russians have advanced further west of the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas Canal in the northeastern Zhovtnevy micro-district to the east of Chasiv Yar.
The analytical portal DeepState reported on the advance of the Russians in Chasiv Yar on August 4.
The Russian invaders could cross the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas Canal, along which Ukrainian fighters were building defenses, BBC Ukraine reported on August 2.
"During three months of fighting here, the Russians were able to capture the only area of Chasiv Yar, which lies to the east of this canal, and on a wide front approached the water obstacle," BBC Ukraine wrote. "In the last days of July, information began to appear that the Russian military did cross the channel on the northeastern edge of Chasiv Yar near Kalynyvka."
Russians were able to cross the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas Canal, military analyst Mykhailo Zhirokhov confirmed to BBC Ukraine.
A video of Ukrainian fighters repelling an attack by Russians in the urban development of Chasiv Yar on the western bank of the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas Canal was distributed on social networks.
