Zelenskyy and Trump plan bilateral meeting at NATO summit
Both leaders earlier expressed their intention to meet, but no exact date had been announced. Zelenskyy noted that negotiations over the timing were ongoing, though the agenda for the meeting was not disclosed publicly.
Interest in the talks from the Ukrainian side has grown amid the limited format of Ukraine’s participation in the NATO summit. According to media reports, Zelenskyy was not included in the official program of negotiations and was invited only to an evening reception. This sparked concerns in Kyiv over the value of his trip to The Hague.
A previous opportunity for a meeting with Trump fell through at the G7 summit in Canada due to the U.S. president’s early departure. According to Reuters, this also affected Washington’s stance during talks on the summit’s final document regarding Ukraine.
Trump confirmed the likelihood of the meeting with Zelenskyy on June 24 while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. The last time the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents met in person was in April, at the funeral ceremony for the Pope in the Vatican — after several months of diplomatic tension.
