Trump plans big arms push for Ukraine, including long-range missiles
U.S. President Donald Trump will announce a new “aggressive” plan to arm Ukraine on July 14 that is expected to include offensive weapons, Axios reported on July 14, citing two sources with knowledge of the plans.
The plan is likely to include long-range missiles that could reach targets deep inside Russia, including Moscow. This could alter the course of the war and affect Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's decisions about a ceasefire.
"Trump is really pissed at Putin. His announcement tomorrow is going to be very aggressive," Senator Lindsey Graham told Axios.
"I expect in the coming days you will see weapons flowing at a record level to help Ukraine defend themselves. I expect in the coming days that there will be tariffs and sanctions available to President Trump he's never had before."
It is believed that Trump decided to move down this path after the July 3 phone call with Putin. It became clear that Kremlin was unwilling to move toward a ceasefire and was instead escalating attacks on Kyiv and other cities.
Putin indicated that over the next 60 days he would make a renewed push to occupy territory up to the administrative borders of the Ukrainian oblasts where Russia has a significant foothold.
"He wants to take all of it," Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron shortly after his call with Putin, according to a source with direct knowledge.
On July 10, Trump told NBC News that the U.S. had made a deal with NATO to send American weapons to Ukraine through the alliance.
“We’re sending weapons to NATO, and NATO is paying for those weapons, a 100%,” he said, adding that “we’re going to be sending Patriots to NATO, and then NATO will distribute that.”

Earlier that day, Reuters reported that for the first time in his tenure, Trump would use the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) to send a package of military aid to Ukraine.
