Türkiye’s FM hints at 'new situation' as Russia-Ukraine fatigue grows

In Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, fatigue is setting in on both sides, which could lead to a “new situation” in 2025, Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with Hürriyet published Sunday, Nov. 3.
“The fatigue of both sides could bring about a new situation in 2025. We’ll see how events unfold,” Fidan said.
He emphasized that Türkiye maintains relations with both Russia and Ukraine and continues to “search for common ground between the parties.” According to Fidan, neither country wants to be seen as “defeated.”
“We have special relationships with both sides. We’re open to listening to both parties,” the minister added.
Fidan stressed that any end to the war should be just—and within the boundaries of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
On Oct. 21, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha arrived in Türkiye, where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss defense cooperation.
Two days later, Erdogan met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit in Kazan, where they talked about “improving trade relations” between their countries.
Officials from Türkiye have repeatedly voiced support for Ukraine’s return to its 1991 borders, including the reclamation of Crimea, but seek to achieve this through diplomatic means.
On Nov. 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed frustration over Türkiye’s ongoing military support for Ukraine in the war Russia initiated.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
