UK to send hundreds of long-range attack drones to Ukraine
The United Kingdom will send hundreds of new long-range attack drones with a range of over 200 kilometers to Ukraine, the UK government said in a statement on May 15.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United Kingdom early on May 15 for discussions with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Ukraine’s ongoing military resistance to Russia’s brutal invasion.
“Today the Prime Minister will confirm the further UK provision of hundreds of air defense missiles and further unmanned aerial systems including hundreds of new long-range attack drones with a range of over 200 kilometers,” reads the statement.
“These will all be delivered over the coming months as Ukraine prepares to intensify its resistance to the ongoing Russian invasion.
On May 11, CNN reported that London had provided Kyiv with Storm Shadow cruise missiles, capable of hitting targets over 250 kilometers away. This information was later confirmed by UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, who emphasized Ukraine’s sovereign right to defend its territory from the Russian invasion.
Wallace added that all of the UK-made Challenger 2 battle tanks promised for delivery had already arrived in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy visited Rome on May 13, where he held talks with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The leaders agreed on air defense and weapons for Ukraine. He also had private talks with Pope Francis in the Vatican.
Later Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin on May 14, where he met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The day before, on May 13, the German government announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth EUR 2.7 billion ($3 billion), which will be the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. It includes tanks, drones and new air defense systems.
In the evening of May 14, Zelenskyy arrived in Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. Following their talks, France vowed to donate in the coming weeks dozens of armored vehicles and light tanks, including the wheeled AMX-10RC, used by the French army until 2021.
