Domestic defense production in Ukraine surges, plans sixfold increase, says minister

Ukraine needs such a large quantity of ammunition that “no country can deliver,” including the United States, Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin stated in an interview with The Independent on Feb. 29.
As a result, Ukraine is focusing on developing more cost-effective methods to maintain the frontline while also increasing domestic production.
According to the official, domestic defense production in Ukraine tripled in 2023, with plans to increase it sixfold this year.
Moreover, Ukraine is positioning itself as a global leader in unmanned technology, as UAVs have emerged as an unexpected cornerstone on Ukraine’s modern battlefields.
“Domestic production is crucial,” Kamyshin said.
“We can produce over one million first-person-view (FPV) drones this year plus thousands of drones that can fly over 1,000km, reaching as far as refineries in Russia. This is a game-changer.”
“Our defense tech is really cool, and together with the newly formed force of unmanned drone systems, it will deliver results,” the minister added.
The European Union (EU) is set to provide Ukraine with more than one million artillery shells by the end of 2024, EU High Representative/Vice-President (HR/VP) Josep Borrell said during his press briefing in Kyiv on Feb. 7.
The European Commission confirmed that the bloc would be able to produce 1 million shells by the end of winter 2024.
Czech President Petr Pavel disclosed on Feb. 17 that the country had discovered hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds abroad, which it could transfer to Ukraine pending funding.
The President’s Office affirmed on Feb. 23 that they would secure funding for 800,000 shells, as indicated by the Czech leader.
