Ukraine is contracting for about 1,000 Patriot interceptor
missiles with allied support, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara said on Sept. 8.
Most of the missiles are expected to arrive in the coming
years, prompting Kyiv to ask allies to transfer interceptors from existing
stockpiles now and replace them later with missiles ordered under the new
contracts, Reuters reported.
Germany will separately provide additional PAC-2 Patriot
interceptors from its military stocks. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius
warned that Berlin expects Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure to
intensify as temperatures fall, Reuters reported.
Germany has not disclosed how many interceptors it will
provide.
EU member states have agreed that part of a €90 billion
($105 billion) loan to Ukraine can be used to obtain critical supplies for
Patriot systems, according to Reuters.
Beyond the Patriot procurement effort, Khmara said Ukraine
faces a $27 billion funding shortfall for drone procurement.
