Ukraine goes on offensive in Bakhmut, regains 1.2 kilometers in last day
The
Ukrainian Armed Forces has started an offensive campaign in Bakhmut to coincide with Russian
troop rotations,
Ukraine’s Operational Command East spokesperson, Serhii Cherevatyi. said on national television on June 9.
"We took advantage of the enemy conducting rotation and hit the troops it brought to the city which are unfamiliar with the area. We’ve stormed their positions for several days. Our troops advanced sometimes 1.2 km in the past day," he said.
15 combat actions, five air strikes, and 368 shellings were conducted in the past 24 hours, he said. It led to 120 Russian soldiers eliminated, 163 injured, and 11 taken captive.
The Ukrainian army hit three guns, a Nona self-propelled mortar, a Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer, a Rapira anti-tank gun, a Grad MLRS, and three munition warehouses.
Bakhmut is half-encircled now, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said on June 7. U.K. intelligence also reported the advance of the Ukrainian army and heavy fighting along the front line as of June 8, with the Ukrainian army retaining the initiative.
The third assault brigade reportedly pushed the Russian occupiers to 1.2 km back along 1.8 km of the frontline the same day.
The Ukrainian army launched a counteroffensive at a decisive stage of the war aimed at regaining Ukraine's territorial integrity, some officers told The Washington Post on June 8.
