Ukraine may have destroyed a Tu-22M3 strategic bomber at Russian airbase, says Moscow Times.
Ukraine may have successfully destroyed a Tu-22M3 strategic bomber at an airbase in Soltsy, Novgorod Oblast, the Moscow Times reported on August 20.
If true, the destruction of the aircraft would deal a significant blow to Russia, as the country can no longer manufacture spare parts for the Tu-22M3.
According to the Moscow Times, over a dozen Russian planes and helicopters have been destroyed or damaged at airbases in Belarus, occupied Crimea, as well as in the Ryazan, Engels, Novosibirsk, and Pskov oblasts of Russia.
Citing a confidential source, the Moscow Times claimed that discussions about "Ukrainian sabotage" were held during meetings between Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and security officials.
On August 19, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that around 10 a.m., Soltsy Airbase was targeted by unidentified drones.
The Defense Ministry subsequently admitted that one aircraft had sustained damage.
