Rada votes to supervise fortification efforts and drone procurement
Ukraine's parliament has approved the formation of a temporary special commission to oversee the use of state budget funds for military fortifications and the procurement and manufacturing of UAVs , MP Iryna Herashchenko reported on May 22.
The motion, which garnered support from 277 lawmakers, aims to enhance the Ukrainian army's capabilities amid ongoing conflicts.
Golos MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced that Mykola Zadorozhnyi, a member of the Servant of the People party, is nominated to lead the commission. The commission's duties will include assessing the army's drone needs, initiating state orders for their production and purchase, and scrutinizing the distribution of UAVs to military units.
Additionally, the commission is tasked with examining the current fortifications along the contact line and ensuring that funds allocated for these constructions are used appropriately.
The proposed lineup for the commission consists of 15 members, including MPs Andriy Bohdanets, Yelyzaveta Bohutska, Mykhailo Bondar, Vitaliy Bort, Anatoliy Burmich, Oleksandr Horeniuk, and Oleksiy Zhmerenetskyi.
This decision follows a disruption in the Verkhovna Rada on May 21, when members of the European Solidarity faction blocked the parliamentary rostrum, demanding an immediate vote on a bill to ban the Moscow Patriarchate church in Ukraine and the establishment of the commission to focus on fortifications and drones. The session was subsequently declared closed due to the protest.
