Ukraine testing new weapons may lead to blasts in Crimea, says top security official
Testing new types of modern weapons by the Ukrainian military may very well cause explosions in Russia-occupied Crimea, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) secretary Oleksiy Danilov told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on April 14.
The official reiterated that Crimea is the territory of Ukraine, so the Armed Forces of Ukraine can legitimately conduct any kind of weapon tests on the peninsula.
“Believe me, if there are tests of any weapon, they’re taking place on our territory,” he said.
“I emphasize once again that Crimea is our territory. Perhaps, new modern types of weapons were tested there on such a day (when blasts occurred). I don’t rule it out.”
Danilov added that the fortifications being hastily erected across Crimean beaches “definitely won’t save” Russian troops.
He also tweeted that “Crimea is the territory of Ukraine, and we will test and use there any weapons not prohibited by international law, that would help liberate our territories.”
On March 26, Ukrainian President’s Representative in Crimea, Tamila Tasheva, said in an interview with NV Radio that Russian invaders are “panicking” and digging trenches along the entire coastline of the peninsula. These fortifications are visible on numerous satellite images published in recent weeks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia’s war against Ukraine should end with the liberation of Crimea – just as it began with its occupation.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin previously said that Ukrainian forces have a good chance of conducting a successful counter-offensive this spring.
