HIMARS strikes target Russian bridges and military equipment in Kursk Oblast
Special Operations Forces (SOF), working with Ukrainian Defense Forces, destroyed enemy engineering equipment in Russia’s Kursk Oblast and released a video of the operation on Telegram.
They also identified and directed HIMARS strikes on Russian bridges and pontoon crossings in the area.
In addition, they reported that together with the Defense Forces, they targeted and destroyed a concentration of enemy equipment, a field ammunition depot, fuel and lubricants storage, an electronic warfare complex, and a 152mm D-20 howitzer.
Key developments in Ukraine’s offensive in Kursk Oblast
On Aug. 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed for the first time that Defense Forces were conducting an operation in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. He emphasized that the goal of the operation, which began on Aug. 6, was to liberate Ukraine's border areas from Russian forces, which had been regularly shelling Sumy Oblast.
That same day, Kursk regional authorities admitted to losing control of 28 settlements. Among the areas now under Ukrainian control is Sudzha, the location of the last functioning transfer point for Russian gas flowing through Ukraine to Europe.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Russian forces have deployed up to 5,000 soldiers to Kursk Oblast, though a counteroffensive would require around 20,000 troops.
On Aug. 20, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Ukraine controls 1,263 square kilometers and 93 settlements in Russia's Kursk Oblast.
