Advances near Bakhmut put strategic Bakhmut-Horlivka highway under Ukrainian fire control, says Ukrainian army rep
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are making progress in the Bakhmut sector and already have fire control over the Bakhmut-Horlivka highway, Illya Yevlash, the head of the press service of the Eastern Troop Grouping, said on national television on Sept. 21.
The highway is one of the main logistical arteries for Russian troops, Yevlash said.
Russian forces are still trying to regain the lost positions in the liberated villages of Andriyivka and Klishchiyivka to the south of Bakhmut, as they are very important from a tactical point of view.
"It is 7 kilometers to Bakhmut from Klishchiyivka," said Yevlash.
“The exposure of this flank gives us the opportunity to strike more at the clusters of personnel, enemy command posts, and equipment. Access to Andriyivka and Klishchiyivka allows us to get closer to one of the enemy's logistics supply arteries, the Bakhmut-Horlivka highway, which is already under our fire control.
“Supplying for the enemy in this area has already become significantly more difficult and will continue to become harder.”
He added that the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their advance with much smaller forces compared to the enemy.
"Intense fighting continues in the zone of the Eastern Troop Grouping," the Ukrainian army spokesman said.
“I can say that the fighting is dynamic, but the types of operations differ: while in the Kupyansk-Lyman sector, we’re defending ourselves and trying to hold back the enemy's advance, in the Bakhmut sector we are making progress and continue to push them out.”
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that although the offensive is not very fast, the Defense Forces are making progress every day.
In early September, the commander of the Tavria operational and strategic grouping of troops, Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had broken through the first line of Russian defenses on the southern section of the front line.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are advancing near Bakhmut and in the south of Ukraine.
Former Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Sept. 18 that since the start of the counter-offensive, the Ukrainian Defense Forces had liberated 260 square kilometers of territory in southern Ukraine and 51 square kilometers near Bakhmut.
