Ukrainian forces repel major Russian assault in Donetsk region

Russian forces launched a major attack near the settlements of Pivnichne and Zalizne in Donetsk Oblast on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 18, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Telegram.
Despite deploying 12 armored vehicles in an attempt to break through Ukrainian defenses and advance toward Toretsk, Ukrainian forces successfully repelled the assault.
During the battle, Ukrainian troops destroyed 10 enemy vehicles and neutralized 68 Russian soldiers, with 41 of them killed. The General Staff praised the bravery and professionalism of Ukraine's defenders.
Reports from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on June 23 indicated that Russian forces had increased the intensity of their offensive operations in Donetsk, particularly along the Toretsk-Horlivka axis, where they had previously shown little activity throughout 2024. Russian troops have also launched an assault on Chasiv Yar from the Toretsk direction.
On July 31, the DeepState portal reported ongoing battles on the outskirts of Toretsk, describing the fight for the city as a "matter of time." On Aug. 12, DeepState analysts noted that Russian forces had made some advances in the Toretsk area.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
