Ukrainian mobile operators to reserve phone numbers of dead soldiers
Ukrainian mobile
operators are setting aside the cell phone numbers of soldiers who have
died or are missing, Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said on
Telegram June 26.
Typically, unused phone numbers are reassigned after one year.
"Thus, you could receive a message ‘Your loved one has joined Viber (messenger app)’ after they are gone," the minister wrote.
"To avoid these situations, (mobile operators) Kyivstar and lifecell have launched phone numbers reservation of defenders who were killed or went missing. Those numbers won't be available for sale for two years."
Customers can reserve numbers through the operators' support services. Once a number is reserved, a text message will confirm the reservation.
Earlier, lifecell announced it was testing a solar-powered base station, allowing it to continue working during power outages.
