Ukrainian troops to enter Crimea ‘soon’ says Budanov
Ukrainian forces will soon enter the Crimean Peninsula, part of Ukraine that has been under military occupation by Russia since 2014, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine has said.
Kyrylo Budanov said this while speaking to Ukrainian television channel TSN on July 29.
Asked about the possible entry of Ukrainian forces into Crimea, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence affirmed that this would happen “soon.”
However, he did not specify a particular date for the de-occupation of the peninsula, saying only that it would occur in the near future.
Ukraine launched a counter-offensive in early June in what many expect to be a bid to liberate the south of the country from Russian military occupation.
However, the movement of Ukrainian forces forward has been slower than expected, with just a few small settlements having been liberated so far.
Nevertheless, the momentum of the Ukrainian advance seems to have picked up in recent days, with fresh footage from the front showing Ukrainian troops in the village of Staromaiyorske, in Zaporizhzhya Oblasts.
Military experts, including retired U.S. General Ben Hodges, who frequently speaks to the media on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have predicted that Ukrainian forces will attempt to push down to the shores of the Azov Sea.
Once there, Ukraine could lay siege to Crimea, having cut off the land route from Russia to the peninsula, and with the Kerch Bridge which leads from Crimea to Russia in range of its UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles.
