Kursk Oblast operation aims to secure border regions, says Ukrainian Defense Minister

Military operation in Russia’s border areas is aimed at reducing the enemy's ability to attack Ukrainian settlements, in particular in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov wrote on Telegram on Aug. 21.
Sumy Oblast borders Russia's Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod Oblasts.
"Our tasks there are to clear the border areas of Russian military threats and prevent enemy shelling and attacks on our cities and villages," he said at a meeting with the U.S. House Congressmen Robert Wittman (R) and David Trone (D) n Kyiv.
Umerov expressed gratitude for the U.S. bilateral assistance to Ukraine. The parties discussed the urgent needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stressing the need for prompt approval by the allies for the use of long-range weapons against targets on Russian territory to protect peaceful Ukrainian cities.
Preparations for the next Ramstein-format meeting and ways to make it as effective as possible were also discussed.
The Ramstein group, or the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) is an alliance of 57 countries (all 32 NATO members and 25 other countries) and the European Union supporting Ukraine's defense by sending military equipment in response to the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.
