US Ambassador to UN meets Kuleba, reaffirms support for Ukraine

During the closed meeting Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support of Ukraine to defend its sovereign territory against Russia’s unprovoked aggression, U.S. Mission to the United Nations Spokesperson Nate Evans said in a statement.
According to him, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and Foreign Minister Kuleba also discussed Russia’s plans to quickly attach currently occupied territories of Ukraine and condemned the announcement of Russia-backed referenda within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.
“These sham referenda are an affront to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that are at the heart of the UN Charter,” Evans said.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield reiterated that the United States will not recognize any attempt by Russia to claim annexation of Ukraine’s sovereign territory.
“Sham ‘referendums’ will not change anything. Neither will any hybrid ‘mobilization’. Russia has been and remains an aggressor illegally occupying parts of Ukrainian land,” Kuleba said in a Twitter statement on Sept. 20.
“Ukraine has every right to liberate its territories and will keep liberating them whatever Russia has to say.”
Thomas-Greenfield and Kuleba stated that all UN Member States must defend the UN Charter and work together to address the crises Russia’s war against Ukraine has exacerbated, including global food insecurity.
The two leaders assessed the progress made under the Black Sea Grain Initiative in getting Ukrainian agricultural products to market.
