President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed into law a bill increasing
penalties for operating scam
call centers on Sept. 16.
He announced the move in an evening address posted on Telegram. The Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) passed the bill earlier the same day.
Zelenskyy thanked MPs for passing bills needed for Ukraine to receive international financing.
“It is important that lawmakers supported criminal liability for fraudulent call centers. The punishment must be severe. I have just signed this law,” Zelenskyy said.
On Sept. 16, the Verkhovna Rada passed seven bills that are needed to secure further international financial assistance. One of them would amend rules governing the taxation and customs clearance of international parcels. Zelenskyy had urged MPs to approve the bills so Ukraine could cover its budget deficit.
The parliament also passed Bill No. 10190 on combating call
centers in its final reading, with 313 lawmakers voting in favor. Parliament
officials said the bill increases liability for establishing scam call centers,
recruiting people to work for them, and facilitating the activities of such
organized groups.
