Zelenskyy stresses need for missile license to boost Ukraine’s air defense
Ukraine lacks air defense missiles and needs a license to produce Patriot system missiles, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Feb. 19.
"We count every day," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, recalling early-morning calls from military commanders.
"At 3, 4, 5 a.m., the commander calls me and says: we are near this city. I won’t name it, but under this city, we have no missiles for Patriot systems. He says — there are eight incoming missiles, but we have nothing left. We’ve exhausted everything."
Zelenskyy said he raised the issue with U.S. officials in discussions on security guarantees.
"You don’t want to send troops, you don’t want NATO. Can we at least get enough Patriot systems?… This conversation is dragging on for too long," he said.
Earlier, Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine now produces 30% of the Defense Forces’ needs — more than any individual European country — but said it remains insufficient.
