ZNPP completely offline after Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid
Following another large-scale Russian attack against energy facilities across Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was automatically taken offline due to falling current frequency in the grid, Ukrainian nuclear operator Energoatom said in a Telegram post on Nov. 23.
According to the message, radiation levels at the power plant remain nominal. ZNPP is now powered by backup generators, and is not producing electricity for the national grid.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, and has been occupied by Russian forces since March 4. Several ZNPP facilities have been damaged by Russian shelling, and the station's employees are captives of the occupying troops.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has since established a permanent monitoring presence at the facility.
