Azerbaijan overtakes Gazprom for second straight month as Turkiye’s top gas supplier

As in June, Azerbaijan was the largest supplier of pipeline gas to Turkiye in July, delivering 1 billion cubic meters.

Russia’s gas monopoly Gazprom cut its pipeline deliveries to Turkiye through the Blue Stream and TurkStream routes by 47% year over year, down to 948 million cubic meters in July.

Iran, by contrast, increased its pipeline gas supplies by 8% to 919 million cubic meters.

Over the first seven months of 2026, Turkiye cut total pipeline gas imports by 2% to 23.363 billion cubic meters.

During that same period, Gazprom reduced its gas supplies to Turkiye by 10% to 11.414 billion cubic meters. Azerbaijan’s deliveries fell 4% to 6.5 billion cubic meters, while Iran increased its supplies by 29% to 5.456 billion cubic meters.

“Imports of liquefied natural gas, after winter records, remained at a seasonal low in June — 194 million cubic meters, or 149,000 tons,” Interfax wrote. “Turkiye’s LNG terminals were operating at 5% capacity. Algeria remained the only LNG exporter under long-term contracts. For the second month in a row, no LNG cargo arrived from the United States.”

As previously reported, in June Turkish state energy company Botas signed a 15-year agreement with SOCAR, TotalEnergies and ADNOC for gas supplies from the Absheron field in Azerbaijan.

The agreement provides for a total of 33 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to be delivered to Turkiye over 15 years starting in 2029.

Gazprom supplied 21.16 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkiye in 2025, a figure that remained almost unchanged from 2024.

In December 2025, Turkiye extended for one year two contracts for importing gas from Russia, with a combined volume of 22 billion cubic meters.

Turkiye imports Russian gas through the Blue Stream and TurkStream pipelines.

In 2024, Turkiye imported 52 billion cubic meters of natural gas, including 21 billion cubic meters from Russia.
