The death toll in Russia's Sept. 3 missile strike on the central Ukrainian city of Poltava has risen to 53, with nearly 300 people confirmed to have been injured, the Interior Ministry reported on Telegram on Sept. 4.
According to the Ministry, eleven people have been rescued from under the debris, and an additional five people are believed to still be trapped.
Rescue workers from the State Emergency Service have already removed 800 tons of rubble from the impact site.
In addition to the direct damage to the institute, three apartment buildings and five detached houses, as well as an office building, were all damaged by the strike.

At 9:10 am Kyiv time on Sept. 3, the Ukrainian Air Force warned of an incoming missile heading towards Poltava.
Almost immediately afterwards, local Telegram channels began reporting about explosions in the Poltava area.
Russian forces are believed to have used two ballistic missiles for the attack. One of them struck the Poltava Military Communications Institute and a hospital, killing at least 53 people.
A three day mourning period for the victims of the strike has been declared in Poltava Oblast.
