Top German official warns of far-right aims to transform democracy to ‘Russian model’
German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Habeck has spoken out against the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), arguing in an interview with Stern on Jan. 17 that they want to turn Germany into a country like Russia.
"Right-wing authoritarians are encroaching on the essence of the republic," he said.
“They want to turn Germany into a state similar to Russia.”
Habeck warned that the German right is "systematically preparing for this.”
Asked whether he was in favor of a ban on AfD, Habeck stated that this was "not a matter of political position, but of law."
However, only the Federal Constitutional Court could decide on a ban, he noted.
Correctiv published an investigation on Jan. 11 stating that representatives of several parliamentary parties took part in a secret meeting where they demanded the deportation of millions of people from the country, including German citizens. The meeting was attended by several high-ranking representatives of AfD.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted to the scandal by stating that Germany defends everyone. He also pledged that the activities of opponents of German democracy would be investigated.
Thousands of people protested in Berlin and Potsdam on Jan. 14 in opposition to right-wing movements, including Alternative for Germany. Protesters demanded that these parties be banned.
The Potsdam protest was attended by Chancellor Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
