Romanian president plans first Ukraine visit to attend Odesa summit
Romanian President Nicușor Dan will visit Ukraine for the first time on Wednesday to attend the fourth Ukraine-Southeast Europe summit in Odesa, the Romanian President’s Office reported on June 11.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy will chair the upcoming summit, which is part of the Ukraine-Southeast Europe format, launched in 2023 as a regional platform to support Kyiv and address the complex consequences of Russian aggression.
The President’s Office stated that Romanian President Nicușor Dan will reaffirm Romania’s commitment to supporting Ukraine at all levels and will join efforts aimed at achieving peace and rebuilding the country after the war.
In Odesa, Dan will also participate in a trilateral meeting with Moldova and Ukraine, where he will discuss key interconnection projects, particularly in energy infrastructure, the EU accession process, and security cooperation.
Nikusor Dan is a pro-European centrist politician, former mayor of Bucharest, and a strong advocate for aiding Ukraine.
On May 18, during the second round of Romania’s presidential election, Dan defeated pro-Russian candidate George Simion with 53.6% of the vote, compared to Simion’s 46.4%.
On June 2, President Zelenskyy said that Dan, the newly elected Romanian president, may visit Ukraine in the summer. The two leaders had previously met at the Bucharest Nine summit in Vilnius.
Zelenskyy said the discussions covered diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine, the Istanbul meeting, the need to strengthen sanctions against Russia, and preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague.
