Russian drone raid wrecks Konotop schools and gas grid

Russian forces launched a massive drone strike on Konotop, damaging schools and energy infrastructure while injuring two women, Mayor Artem Semenikhin reported on Sept. 18.
The assault caused extensive destruction across residential districts, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and transportation infrastructure, triggering widespread gas and power outages, he wrote.
According to municipal reports, Russian loitering munitions directly struck and damaged School No. 11 alongside a local kindergarten. Medical clinics, municipal transport hubs, and railway infrastructure nodes also sustained direct hits and blast fragmentation damage.
The bombardment damaged dozens of single-family private residences alongside commercial storefronts and small business facilities.
Direct strikes hit the city's municipal gas distribution network, severing transmission mains and cutting off gas supplies to major sectors of Konotop. Electrical power transmission grids sustained severe damage near the impact sites, resulting in localized blackouts across urban neighborhoods.
According to updated emergency casualty assessments, two civilian women — born in 1965 and 1991 — sustained injuries in the drone strike and are receiving medical assistance.
Systemic Assaults on Konotop
Repeated northern rail targeting: Konotop — a critical railway junction in Sumy Oblast — has remained a recurring target for Russian stand-off strikes throughout the late summer and early autumn.
Prior infrastructural bombardment: In late August, successive Russian missile and drone attacks heavily damaged Konotop's railway dispatch nodes, electrical substations, commercial manufacturing plants, and residential apartment buildings.
