Slovakia fully supports Ukraine’s EU membership — PM Fico
Slovakia is firmly behind Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Denys Shmyhal, on April 11.
"Slovakia’s support for Ukraine's ambitions to join the EU is not speculation, but absolute, full support," said Fico.
The PM reiterated that Slovakia would not obstruct Ukraine's accession process. Instead, Fico expressed his desire to assist Ukraine with the negotiation process and offer its experience.
“Slovakia wishes for Ukraine to become a member of the EU quickly because it is a guarantee of prospects and development for the country,” he added.
“And for the peaceful development of your country, we are rooting for you.”
Fico also confirmed that Slovakia would participate in the international Ukraine Peace summit in Switzerland, scheduled for mid-June.
Finally, he declared that Slovakia is offering to assist Ukraine with its demining efforts.
“We are not talking about expertise, but about specific demining machines; discussions are ongoing about special agricultural equipment that can be used for such purposes," Fico said.
Previously, the Slovak PM often repeated Russian propaganda narratives about Ukraine being “responsible” for the Russian invasion and has publicly urged Kyiv to cede territory to Moscow in exchange for peace.
