USA approves ATACMS use in Russia's Kursk Oblast - Axios

The United States has authorized Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes only within Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Axios reported on Nov. 18, citing a source.
The U.S. approved the use of ATACMS systems exclusively in Kursk Oblast because of North Korean troops being stationed there, the official said.
This decision is part of President Joe Biden’s administration’s efforts to "deter North Korea" from deploying additional troops to Russia for the war against Ukraine, journalists wrote.
“U.S. officials hope that should North Korean forces be targeted, Pyongyang might reconsider its decision to send troops to Russia, causing the Russian counteroffensive to fail,” the report wrote.
Ukraine was informed of Biden’s decision approximately three days ago, the unnamed source added.
Long-range missile strikes approval on Russia
President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory, media reported on Nov. 17.
The weapons will likely first target Russian and North Korean forces to protect Ukrainian troops in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, The New York Times wrote.
Reuters, citing sources, wrote that Ukraine plans to conduct its first long-range strikes in the coming days. Sources added that the initial attacks will likely involve ATACMS missiles, which have a range of up to 190 miles (306 km).
French outlet Le Figaro initially reported that the U.K. and France had also authorized Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory using SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles, but later amended its article to remove this information.
