Ukrainian Armed Forces have yet to strike the deciding blow, believes Estonian intelligence
Ukrainian forces are still looking for the best place in the Russian defense to strike a decisive blow, Chief of the Estonian Defense Forces Intelligence Center Margo Grosberg stated on June 9, according to Estonia news outlet ERR.
Combat is currently ongoing around Bakhmut, he added, but the intensity of combat operations has increased sharply in Zaporizhzhya Oblast, which experts have speculated is to be the thrust of Ukraine’s counteroffensive.
“(This combat) is first of all in Orikiv in Zaporizhzhya Oblast, but also combat has already been continuing for a week from the direction of Velyka Novosilka in the direction of Mariupol,” Grosberg explained.
He noted that Ukraine has yet to strike a decisive blow as part of its counter-offensive operation, but that its forces are looking for points along Russian defense lines that can be used as a staging ground for further successes.
Grosberg also suggested that this new counteroffensive may not be similar to the counter-offensive that was conducted last fall in Kharkiv, as the occupying forces have had nine months to prepare.
“The search for this sort of breakthrough may take a long time,” he added.
Ukraine’s next counteroffensive will be more difficult and multi-faceted than the Kharkiv operation, Grosberg believes, saying that combat intensity is only likely to increase – but this in large part will expend on the morale and preparedness of the Russian forces.
“Of course, when it comes to fighting spirit – and here I have no doubts – Ukrainians have a significant advantage because we’re talking about the liberation of their lands,” he noted.
