Last reactor at ZNPP to be placed in “cold shutdown” after Russian destruction of Kakhovka Dam
Ukraine’s nuclear regulator, Derzhatomrehuluvanya, has ordered Ukrainian nuclear operator Energoatom to cease use of the fifth reactor of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and transfer it to a “cold shutdown” state, the regulator said in a press release on June 9.
This decision was made due to the impossibility of establishing the safety status of the reactor, due to its ongoing occupation by Russian forces.
The regulator noted that similar restrictions exist for all of ZNPP’s other regulators.
Earlier, Energoatom reported that despite the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam by Russian forces, the ZNPP is not at risk of a nuclear accident, and has enough water for the plant’s currently limited operations.
Rafael Grossi, the general director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, stated that the destruction of the dam raises risks for the ZNPP – Europe’s largest nuclear power plant – due to a possible lack of water in the cooling pond feeding the plant.
Ukrainian military intelligence has warned that the dam’s destruction by Russian soldiers raises the risks of a nuclear catastrophe at the ZNPP.
